"How to Cook to Your Life"

By Jenn Ghelardini

HFF is not known for its parties, but we were quite impressed when we witnessed the Munich premiere of the film “How to Cook Your Life.”

This film is of significant importance to the school because the director is an HFF alum. She is a household name in Germany and holds many prestigious awards. The HFF students told us she rarely ever visits the school since she is usually busy working and shooting.

The film focused on the Zen traditions of cooking. It followed the daily activities of one monk chef in a Zen monastery in California. The monk was always funny and optimistic. We were able to understand and appreciate his simple, but profound outlooks on life, simply from following his cooking.

The film showed beautiful organic foods that made our mouths water just from looking at them. When the film was over we were treated like VIPs and got to experience a black-tie-like reception complete with a four-course meal. The meal was vegetarian and consisted of various healthy medleys. This was such a nice break from the heartier traditional Bavarian foods we had been eating.

It was so nice to attend a formal movie premiere while in Munich. It was such a rare experience even for the HFF school veterans who had been attending for five or six years to be around a world-renowned director, eat such a delicious meal and watch an entertaining film.
